M.PHARM. ( PHARMA. CHEMISTRY)
Course Duration: 2 years
Affiliation: Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technological University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, State Govt. University & Pharmacy council of India (PCI), New Delhi and AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) New Delhi.
Eligibility: : B.Pharm from an institution recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India with minimum of 60% marks (GPAT qualified students shall be given preference).
M. Pharm holders are typically employed in pharmaceutical research and development, as well as laboratories and manufacturing work in the pharmaceutical sector, assessing products for purity and strength. Candidates for master's degrees can also work as lecturers in pharmacy colleges and universities.
The mantra of medicinal chemists has always been "better medications for better therapy." Medicinal chemists are crucial in the identification of lead molecules, lead optimization, biological knowledge generation, and organic synthesis, which includes developing new synthetic procedures for existing drugs or developing new compounds for diseases under investigation. Dr. Sanjay Singh (Principal, Siddhartha Institute of Pharmacy, Dehradun) established the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry with the goal of instilling expertise in future pharmacy graduates. The department prospered under the guidance of leading notable scientists and academicians. It has grown into a full-fledged centre of excellence in drug research and development, generating world-class pharmaceutical experts to serve the country.
Individuals are transformed and empowered to make a positive effect on the world as a result of the unique curriculum elements combined with sound practical exposure. Three organic chemistry synthesis labs, research labs, a polymer chemistry lab, and an instrument lab make up the department. All of the labs are outfitted with cutting-edge research equipment.
Areas of research
The key areas of research are:
• Design and synthesis of new chemical entities for nephrology, neurology, and cardiology, as well as anticancer, antibacterial, and antidiabetic drug synthesis
• Solution-phase synthesis techniques for the production of unnatural/functionalized amino acids and peptides
• Solvent-free environment, water-based reaction with or without catalyst, microwave/ultrasound-assisted synthesis
• Natural lead compounds undergo structural changes
Career opportunities
The students have successful careers in the pharmaceutical business as well as academics. They can work in R&D, QC, and QA, as medical writers, in Pharmacovigilance, as chemists, pharmacists, and analytical chemists, as patent writers, and in Pharmacopeia labs. They can also pursue academic careers or further their education at numerous research institutes in India and overseas, and work in a variety of scientific jobs in certified labs, institutions, and universities.
The Master of Pharmacy (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) degree programme is structured and developed to prepare students for careers in academia and the pharmaceutical sector. Pharmaceutical chemistry is a stimulating discipline with a traditional focus on organic synthetic chemistry and broad goals of drug discovery that connects many scientific disciplines and allows collaboration with researchers from other disciplines such as biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, theoretical chemists, microbiologists, and bio-pharmacists in the development of new drugs. The goal of the curriculum is to enable postgraduate students to work independently, competently, and technically in a range of settings, including academic and research careers.
M. Pharm graduates can work for the government in a Junior Executive position in a variety of departments, including production and quality control. After gaining sufficient experience, they can advance to the position of Deputy Manager and finally Manager. If their expertise and experience are appropriate for the senior position, Junior Pharmacists can advance to Senior Pharmacist. Aspirants who want to become teachers can work as lecturers in any government institution. Assistant professor is the next higher classification possible for a lecturer. To be considered for this higher position, a professor must have a specified number of years of experience. After gaining sufficient experience, an Assistant Professor can advance to the position of Senior Professor.
